- Catalogue type
- A product grid repeats, so it is faster per page. A corporate brochure designs every spread from scratch; a technical catalogue adds tables and drawings.
- Product count
- Each product means data entry, image placement and code matching. Beyond 100 products a category structure and an index become necessary.
- Languages
- A second language is not a copy-paste: text length changes, so the layout is rebuilt page by page.
- Deadline
- Urgent work means the team drops other jobs and works evenings — that is what the surcharge covers.

What do these cost lines mean?
- Print setup
- Plates and make-ready. Charged per forme, not per copy — this is why small runs cost more per unit.
- Press run
- The cost of running the sheets through the press, charged per thousand sheets.
- Paper
- Calculated by weight: sheet area × grammage × price per kilo, plus 15% for make-ready waste.
- Coating and varnish
- Varnish is applied on press and is cheap. Lamination is a separate process. Spot UV needs its own plate, so it costs the most.
- 5th colour
- A Pantone or metallic ink outside CMYK. Needs an extra plate and press pass on every forme it appears.
- Binding
- Charged per copy. Saddle stitch is cheapest but has a page limit; perfect binding needs a spine thick enough to glue.
